The Uttar Pradesh government is working on a plan to put cow urine into industrial use, and this is one of the issues that will be discussed at a mega meeting of the animal husbandry and dairy development department to be held at the Mahakumbh mela grounds in Prayagraj.
The state government wants to, with the cooperation of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and corporate companies, buy cow urine in bulk. This will be turned into phenyl, pesticides and organic fertilizers. The money thus earned will be used to make cow shelters financially self-reliant, and promote organic products. At a conservative estimate, the government wants to double the commercial use of cow urine. The meeting is to be held on February 8.
Big decisions regarding the development of livestock, dairy industry and cow shelters are expected to be taken. The government aims to strengthen animal health services, promote commercial use of cow urine and double milk production. Changes in the state’s Dairy Policy 2022 will also be discussed, as will be the 24-hour availability of animal hospitals and the strengthening of milk unions. Proposals from the meeting will be presented to the cabinet for final approval.

One of these will be to operate animal hospitals 24 hours in all the districts of the state to upgrade animal health services. At present, animal ambulance service is available only from morning to evening. A veterinarian, a paramedical staff and a 1962 ambulance service will be deployed in every hospital at night, so that farmers and livestock farmers can get their animals treated any time.
The Yogi government is also working to make cow shelters self-reliant under CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility). Under this scheme, with cooperation from NABARD and other fertilizer companies, financial muscle will be added to the operation of cow shelters. Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) will establish a cow shelter that will be able to house 2,000 bovines at Aonla, Bareilly. It will offer both protection to cows and benefits to local farmers.
As for the changes in the dairy policy, the department is likely to suggest that it be equivalent to the new industrial policy and food processing policy, which will give it more boost. Under this, a decision can be taken to hand over Kannauj, Gorakhpur, Kanpur dairy plant and Ambedkar Nagar animal feed plant to the NDDB on a 10-year lease, which will strengthen the milk unions of the state. Apart from this, the government will aim to double milk production in the state in the next five years, which will work towards making Uttar Pradesh the milk production centre of the country.
