A truck driver from Sopore died in a firing incident by the army after allegedly failing to stop at a security checkpoint in Baramulla district, police said on Thursday.
In an official statement, the police reported that an Army unit had set up a Mobile Vehicle Check Post (MVCP) to monitor potential threats in the area. "A civilian truck, moving at high speed, was observed approaching the checkpoint. Despite multiple warnings, the driver did not stop and instead accelerated past the post. Security personnel pursued the vehicle for approximately 23 kilometres and, following standard protocol, fired at the tyres to bring it to a halt at Sangrama Chowk," the statement said
A subsequent search of the vehicle was conducted, and the injured driver was rushed to GMC Baramulla, where doctors declared him dead.
A case has been registered at Baramulla police station, and the truck has been taken into custody for a thorough examination. Authorities have also initiated post-mortem procedures to determine the exact cause of death.
Appealing for public restraint, the police urged people not to spread rumours or misinformation about the incident. "A comprehensive investigation is underway, and official updates will be provided. Any attempts to disrupt public order or circulate false information will be dealt with strictly," the statement added.
The Army, in a separate post on X, issued a similar statement, reiterating that the truck driver was shot after failing to stop at the security checkpoint.
