Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi will arrive in Jammu on Saturday to discuss the security situation, especially the rising terror attacks in the region. This is his second visit to the region since assuming the charge of Army Chief on June 30.
The visit comes at a time when Jammu is witnessing a spike in attacks by terrorists on security forces.
The attacks, initially restricted to Poonch and Rajouri, have spread to Doda, Reasi, Kathua and Udhampur. The terrorist strikes in the last 32 months have led to the loss of 48 soldiers. Nine civilians, including seven pilgrims, died in a terror attack on June 9 when terrorists targeted a Katra-bound bus in Reasi, which was returning from Shiv Khori.
The attacks have raised alarm among security circles and the Centre, given that elections are likely in September this year as per the Supreme Court order.
Dwivedi will be briefed about the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir by the top Army Commanders and senior police officers.
The visit is happening after Friday's Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.
Apart from the increase in terror attacks by hardcore terrorists in Jammu, there have also been attempts of infiltration in Kashmir. Two infiltration attempts were foiled by the Army last week in north Kashmir’s Keran resulting in the killing of five terrorists.
