Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Bhagel submitted his resignation to Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan after the Congress party’s defeat in the assembly elections.

As per the latest updates from the Election Commission, the BJP won 52 seats and is leading in another two in the state. The Congress bagged 34 seats and is ahead in another seat.

“Congress respects the mandate of people in Chhattisgarh. We will review the results,” Bhagel said while talking to reporters after submitting his resignation.

He also congratulated the BJP on its victory in the state.

Bhagel has been hopeful of another term as the chief minister after most of the exit polls predicted a Congress victory in the state.

The Congress leader emerged victorious in the Patan assembly seat, defeating BJP candidate Vijay Baghel by 19,723 votes.

Baghel, who became the CM in 2018, has emerged as one of the most formidable state-level leaders of the Congress in the last five years.

With his welfare schemes, invocation of regional pride and astute political skills which helped him overcome challenges from within the party, he became the face of the Congress ahead of the 2023 assembly polls.
