The Election Commission has issued a show-cause notice to Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra over her remarks related to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s temple visits.

Vadra has been asked to respond to the notice by October 30.

Earlier, the Bharatiya Janata Party filed a complaint with the poll panel alleging that the Congress general secretary had violated the model code of conduct after she made the controversial remark in poll-bound Rajasthan on October 20.

Addressing a public rally in Dausa, Vadra had said she had seen it on TV that when an envelop of donation made by Modi at a temple was opened, it carried only Rs 21.

She, however, added that she was not aware if the claim is true or not.

The Congress leader then went on to attack the BJP, saying "envelops" are shown to public by the ruling party but nothing is found in them after the elections.

The BJP, in its complaint, accused Vadra of "invoking the personal religious devotion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi" to make false claims during her poll campaign in Rajasthan.

Her remarks violated the Indian Penal Code and the Representation of People Act, the party said.

Union minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, who was part of a BJP delegation which submitted the complaint to the Election Commission, accused Vadra of using religious feelings to stoke disharmony in society.

"Is Priyanka Gandhi above the law? Does she believe in any law? She is using religious feelings to stoke disharmony. She cannot do it," Meghwal said.
