Police have launched a probe into the incident

Two senior faculty members at a private engineering college in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad have been suspended for scolding a student who raised ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogan on the  campus, reports said on Saturday.

The incident took place on Friday evening during a cultural event as part of the induction programme at the ABES Engineering College. 

According to reports, a student who was on the stage for a performance, chanted ‘Jai Shri Ram’ which was objected to by two lady professors. The teachers asked the student to leave the stage, saying it was a cultural event and such slogans were not allowed there.

After videos of the alleged incident went viral on social media platforms, a few right-wing groups staged protests in front of the college, prompting the management to form a committee to investigate the matter.

Based on the committee’s recommendations, the principal suspended faculty members Mamata Gautam and Shweta Sharma.

Meanwhile, reports also claimed that a police investigation has been launched into the incident. 

Director of ABES Engineering College, Dr Sanjay Kumar Singh, issued a video statement in which he clarified that no action will be taken against the students.

 “A video has come to my cognisance where some students and faculty members were seen having a disagreement on a topic. A inquiry committee has been formed and action will be taken once the matter is probed. As far as the students are concerned, college authority will not take any action against them,” he said.
