Bengaluru: Woman, toddler die as under-construction metro pillar collapses

The victims were riding a scooter when the column weighing tonnes fell on them

A woman and her toddler son were killed in Bengaluru when an under-construction metro pillar collapsed on Tuesday.

According to police, the incident took place around 11am on Outer Ring Road near HBR Layout, when the TMT bars erected for the construction of a pillar along the KR Puram-Airport line under Phase 2B of Namma Metro fell on their scooter. The height of the pillar is said to be over 40 feet and weighing several tonnes.

The column fell on the family of four who were on the scooter. Tejasvini, a software engineer, and her two-year-old son Vihan succumbed to injuries. "Both suffered head injuries, we tried out best to save them. There was lot of blood loss already and also fall in BP," doctors who treated them said. 

 Her husband Lohit Kumar and their daughter, who were being treated for injuries, are doing fine, doctors said.

Police said they have registered a case and investigation will follow.

Addressing reporters in Dharwad, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai assured an inquiry into the incident and compensation to the bereaved. "I just got to know about it, we will get it investigated.. we will ascertain the reason for the collapse of the pillar and provide compensation," he said.
