The three murders in Dakshina Kannada district in 10 days have made the district administration impose prohibitory orders till August 1. All the shops and commercial establishments shall remain closed from 6pm to 6am with immediate effect, though emergency and essential services will not be hindered.

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Dr Rajendra K.V., on Friday, extended the prohibitory order (CrPC Section 144) in Bantwal, Belthangady, Puttur, Kadaba, and Sullia taluks, from July 29 midnight till August 6 midnight.

The order bars the assembly of five or more persons in public places. Carrying weapons, public processions, burning effigies, or holding protests are banned.

The murders of Masood B. (18) in Bellare on July 21, Praveen Nettare (32) in Bellare on July 26 and Fazil (23) in Surathkal in Mangaluru on July 28, are suspected to be interlinked.

Schools and colleges in Suratkal, Bajpe, Mulki and Pannambur police station limits remained closed on Friday, even as the police urged people to offer ‘namaz’ at home. The funeral procession of Fazil drew a few thousands despite prohibitory orders.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said, “CCTV cameras would be installed at all border crossing spots along the Kerala border. Checkposts and temporary police camps will be set up at sensitive spots in villages in the coastal region. Vacancies in the police department will be filled up soon. Night patrolling will be intensified and an additional battalion of KSRP will be deployed in Dakshina Kannada district.”

“The life of every citizen is important,” he said after a meeting with senior police officers.

Leaders of religious organisations, political parties, and other community organisations have been called for a peace meeting on Saturday (July 30) at the DC office.
