A month after the Uttar Pradesh assembly election results were declared, the BSP and Congress are embroiled in a new row.
On Saturday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi claimed his party had reached out to BSP supremo Mayawati, but got no response. He claimed the Congress asked Mayawati to become chief ministerial candidate of a potential alliance, but “She did not even talk to us”.
He accused Mayawati of facilitating a victory for the incumbent BJP government as she was facing pressure from Central agencies such as the CBI and ED.
On Sunday, Mayawati responded to Rahul by reading out a terse statement. She was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying “The Congress needs to worry about itself first”. She alleged Rahul's claims were an attempt to malign the BSP.
Mayawati said Rahul's allegations of Central pressure were untrue. She was quoted by NDTV as saying “He [Rahul] can't set his own house in order, but is taking potshots at BSP. This exposes his mindset. Even Rajiv Gandhi (Rahul Gandhi's father) tried to defame the BSP and now even Priyanka Gandhi is doing the same by saying that I am afraid of ED and other probe agencies. All these allegations are not true. They should know that we have fought and won all these issues in the Supreme Court.”
She argued the comments by Rahul Gandhi exposed the “casteist mindset” of the Congress.
Mayawati targeted Rahul for hugging Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament in 2018. “We are not a party where a leader like Rahul Gandhi forcefully hugs the prime minister in Parliament, we aren't a party whose fun is made across the world,” she was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
