Ukraine President Zelenskyy speaks to Modi, requests India's support at UN Security Council

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and requested India's political support to his country in the United Nations Security Council against the military operations of Russia. “Spoke with Indian Prime Minister @narendramodi. Informed of the course of 🇺🇦 repulsing 🇷🇺 aggression. More than 100,000 invaders are on our land. They insidiously fire on residential buildings. Urged India to give us political support in UN Security Council. Stop the aggressor together!,” Zelenskiy said in a tweet. The Prime Minister's Office confirmed the talks between the two leaders and said Zelenskyy briefed the Prime Minister in detail about the ongoing conflict situation in Ukraine. &quot;Prime Minister expressed his deep anguish about the loss of life and property due to the ongoing conflict. He reiterated his call for an immediate cessation of violence and a return to dialogue, and expressed India’s willingness to contribute in any way towards peace efforts,&quot; the PMO said. Modi also conveyed India’s deep concern for the safety and security of Indian citizens, including students, present in Ukraine. He sought facilitation by Ukrainian authorities to expeditiously and safely evacuate Indian citizens. Notably, Zelenskyy talked to Modi a day after India abstained on a US-sponsored UN Security Council resolution that &quot;deplores in the strongest terms&quot; Russia's &quot;aggression&quot; against Ukraine, with New Delhi saying dialogue is the only answer to settling differences and disputes and voicing &quot;regret&quot; that the path of diplomacy was given up. The resolution did not pass since permanent member Russia, and President of the Security Council for the month of February, used its veto. The resolution received 11 votes in favour and three abstentions, including by India, China and the UAE. &quot;Dialogue is the only answer to settling differences and disputes, however daunting that may appear at this moment. It is a matter of regret that the path of diplomacy was given up. We must return to it. For all these reasons, India has chosen to abstain on this resolution,&quot; India's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador T.S. Tirumurti said in India's explanation of vote in the Council. The UN Security Council on Friday voted on the draft resolution by the US and Albania and co-sponsored by several other nations including Australia, Estonia, Finland, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Romania and the United Kingdom. Russia, a permanent member of the 15-member powerful Security Council, used its veto power and the resolution failed, as expected, but Western nations said the resolution seeks to show Moscow's isolation on the global stage for its invasion and actions against Ukraine. Moscow lauded New Delhi's stand at the UNSC and said the country is committed to maintain close dialogue with India on the situation around Ukraine. “Highly appreciate India’s independent and balanced position at the voting in the UNSC on February 25, 2022. In the spirit of the special and privileged strategic partnership Russia is committed to maintain close dialogue with India on the situation around Ukraine,” the Russian Embassy in Delhi tweeted.
