A city trial court in Chennai, on Wednesday, awarded death penalty to seven people accused of the brutal murder of neurologist Dr. S.D. Subbiah, in front of Billroth Hospital at RA Puram in Chennai, in 2013. Two other accused have been sentenced to double life, while another accused, who had turned approver, has been allowed to go free.

The order was pronounced by Additional Sessions Judge I.S. Alli, declaring all the nine accused as guilty of the offences. Dr. Subbiah was brutally attacked with sickles and machetes, and succumbed to the injuries nine days later. The attack was the result of a property dispute over a 2.4-acre plot of land in his native village of Anjugramam in Kanyakumari district.

“I thank the judiciary and the people who stood by us. We have got justice,” said Dr. Subbiah’s wife Shanthi.

Following the judgement, all the nine persons involved in the murder were arrested by the police. The cops arrested Dr. James Sathish Kumar and henchmen Murugan and Selvaprakash, Ponnusamy, Basil, Boris, and William.

Ponnusamy, Basil, Boris, William, James Satish Kumar, Murugan and Selvaprakash have been sentenced to capital punishment for offences under Sections 302 and 120B of IPC, while Mary Pushpam and Yesurajan have been sentenced to double life.
