Newly appointed Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu, on Tuesday, assured that the state will be prosperous again through the Punjab model.

He said the 18-point programme released by the Congress high command will make people shareholders of power, reported Hindustan Times. "Let the power given by the people be returned to them in the form of development,” he was quoted as saying. The Congress leader was speaking after visiting Khatkar Kalan, the ancestral village of Bhagat Singh, to pay tributes to the freedom fighter at his memorial Nawanshahr.

Sidhu was  accompanied by MLA Kuljit Singh Nagra, who is one of the four working presidents appointed by the Congress to assist him.

After paying tribute to the freedom fighter, the Congress leader said he has come here to "seek guidance and awaken the spirit of truth and rights among every Punjabi and Congress worker.”

After paying floral tributes to Bhagat Singh, Sidhu, along with other party leaders, headed for Amritsar. He will pay obeisance at the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Wednesday.

The Congress leadership had, on Sunday, appointed Sidhu as the chief of the state unit despite the opposition from a few leaders from the state, effectively paving the way for him to emerge as a potential successor to Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh.

Meanwhile, farmers representing the Kirti Kisan Union blocked traffic for half-an-hour after they were not allowed to meet Sidhu. Sohan Singh Athwal of the Kirti Kisan Union said they had no plans to ''gherao'' the new chief of the Punjab Congress.
