'Cruel, inhumane': Congress blasts BJP after reports claim patients sleeping on pavements in Karnataka

"No one in India's history would treat other humans with such callousness," they said

Reacting to news reports claiming that coronavirus patients were sleeping on the pavements outside hospitals in Bidar, Karnataka, the Congress party alleged "criminal negligence" on the part of the Karnata government. "This is heartbreaking and devastating. Such cruel, inhumane and criminal negligence of Yediyurappa government is unpardonable. No one in India’s history would have treated other human beings with such callousness, much less COVID-19 patients. The CM and BJP should hang their heads in shame," spokesperson Randeep Surjewala tweeted. 

A news reports from Mirror Now had shown purported images of COVID-19 patients sleeping on the pavement, as hospitals could not accommodate them, owing to bed shortages. 

Another partry spokesperson Shama Mohamed wrote: "Heartbreaking ! Why wasn’t the funds in PM Cares not used to ramp up healthcare in our country," she wrote.

Karnataka has reported another biggest single day spike of 23,558 new COVID-19 cases and 116 related fatalities, taking the total caseload 12.22 lakh and the toll to 13,762. The state had previously reported its biggest single day spike of 21,794 cases on Tuesday. Bengaluru Urban alone accounted for 13,640 of the total number of cases. The day also saw 6,412 patients getting discharged after recovery.

Cumulatively 12,22,202 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in Karnataka, which includes 13,762 deaths and 10,32,233 discharges. Out of 1,76,188 active cases, 1,75,284 patients are stable and in isolation at designated hospitals, while 904 are in Intensive Care Units.
