Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee has served a legal notice to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, seeking an unconditional apology over the latter’s “defamattorty” comments against him earlier this week. In his notice, Abhishek has also warned that if an apology is not tendered within 36 hours, he will initiate legal proceedings against Adhikari.

Abhishek, a nephew of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleged that Adhikari, who recently quit the TMC and joined the saffron party, had made “vile, uncouth, false, malicious, and defamatory” statements against him during a public meeting of the BJP at Paschim Midnapore.

Banerjee lashed out at Adhikari for questioning his integrity without any evidence and also sought to remind the former Trinamool leader that he himself is an accused in multiple criminal cases. Mentioning Narada and Saradha cases, the notice said: "Engulfed in egotism and arrogance, you (Adhikari) seem to have forgotten about your many crimes committed against the public.”

Talking at a public meeting on January 19, Suvendhi had made an indirect reference to Abhishek as ‘Tolabaaj Bhaipo’ (extortionist nephew).

Earlier, Adhikari had alleged that the Trinamool Congress is like a private limited company run by two people, referring to Chief Minister Banerjee and Abhishek.

"Her (Mamata's) days are numbered as the chief minister. She should be ready with a letterhead that reads former CM," Adhikari said.
