President Ram Nath Kovind, on Friday, contributed Rs 500,100 for the purpose of the construction of Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
The contribution was made to a delegation consisting of treasure of the Ram Janmabhoomi Teerath Kshetra Trust Govind Dev Giriji Maharaj, temple construction committee's chief Nripendra Mishra, international working president of the VHP Alok Kumar and RSS leader Kulbhushan Ahuja, who met President Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan, say media reports.
"He is the first citizen of the country so we went to him to initiate this drive. He donated a sum of ₹ 5,00,100," news agency ANI quoted Alok Kumar as saying.
The news agency has also reported that Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan handed over a cheque of Rs 1 lakh to a VHP leader as a contribution for the construction of the temple.
The Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, set up by the Centre for the construction and management of the Ram temple in Ayodhya had, on Friday, started a month-long mass contact and contribution campaign across the country for the construction of the temple.
The trust has reportedly decided against using government fund or funds from abroad for the construction, and instead chose to collect the amount from households across the nation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had performed the bhoomi pujan to begin the construction of the temple on August 5 last year.
