The Vishwa Hindu Parishad has come down heavily on West Bengal MP Kalyan Banerjee for his comments on Sita and disciples of Ram.

On Saturday, addressing a public meeting in Howrah, the All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC) MP had said that Sita would have told Ram that she was glad that she had been abducted by Ravan. “Had your chelas (followers) who raise the slogan of Jai Shri Ram and wear saffron abducted me, my condition would have been the same as that of the Hathras victim.”

The Hathras victim was a reference to a young girl who had been gang-raped in the UP district in September 2020 and had subsequently died. Her cremation at night by the district administration had raised a furore, with the courts taking notice of it.

“He [Banerjee] has insulted Lord Ram and Sita. He has breached the sanctity of religion. Such a person should be tried for instigation and must be removed from his position at once,” read a statement issued by the VHP.

VHP’s Ayodhya spokesperson Sharad Sharma said, “This comment is an insult to Hindus and to their faith. The MP has also insulted Ma Kali who is the resident goddess of West Bengal.”

Sharma said that West Bengal and Ayodhya shared a close relationship. “The MP has insulted both Ayodhya and West Bengal”.

Sharma further said that the party was actively supporting anti-national forces in the state and also providing protection to infiltrators. “They are trying to cleave away parts of the country. Hindus are being insulted. The entire state is in anarchy. The followers of Maha Kali, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, Swami Ramakrishna Paramhans, Swami Vivekananda, Subhash Chandra Bose and Rabindranath Tagore want freedom from this government. MPs like Banerjee are afraid of the coming winds of change and are exasperated, and hence, attacking Hindus.”

Assembly elections in West Bengal are due later this year. The BJP has alleged that the Mamata Banerjee-headed government is attacking its workers as it has sensed that it will be defeated in the polls.
