Aijaz Hussain, a BJP youth leader in Kashmir, has given the party its first break in the District Development Council (DDC) polls in Kashmir.
Hussain commands good influence on people in Khanmoh area of Srinagar, a Shia Muslim-dominated locality. He was up against candidates of the People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration—a seven-party alliance that seeks the restoration of Article 370 and statehood for Jammu and Kashmir—and JK Apni Party (JK AP), a BJP ally. But Hussain was able to cross the finishing line, leaving rivals behind comfortably.
The young leader has helped the BJP make inroads in Khanmoh, an area that was traditionally held by the NC and the PDP.
Talking to reporters after his win, Hussain said he was very happy with his win. “Today, I want to congratulate the people of Kashmir, the national and the security forces who have sacrificed their lives for the nation... The BJP has won a great victory today against the alliance of PAGD.”
He said despite the alliance of the regional parties, the BJP has secured a win in Khanmoh-II seat. He said the divisive forces have been defeated and the BJP has managed its first breakthrough from Kashmir largely due to the leadership and popularity of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
