Actor-turned-politician Khushbu Sundar met with a car accident on Wednesday at Melmaruvathur in the outskirts of Chennai when a tanker rammed into her vehicle, but has escaped unhurt. The BJP leader was on her way to Cuddalore to join the Vel Yatra when the incident happened. She shared images of her damaged car on Twitter, adding that she is safe.

Khushbu, who joined the Tamil Nadu BJP after resigning from the Congress last month, further said that her and her husband’s belief in Lord Murugan saved her.

“Met with an accident near Melmarvathur..a tanker rammed into us.With your blessings and God's grace I am safe. Will continue my journey towards Cuddalore to participate in #VelYaatrai #Police are investigating the case. #LordMurugan has saved us. My husband’s trust in him is seen,” she tweeted.

She clarified for the media that the tanker rammed into her vehicle which was on the right lane. She said police will investigate to rule out foul play.

“Request the press to understand that a container rammed into me and not the other way. My car was on the move in the right lane and this container came from nowhere and rammed into me. Police are investigating n questioning the driver to rule out any foul play,” she said in another tweet.

The Vel Yatra, organised by the state BJP unit, is seen as an attempt by the party to gain political mileage using religion and woo Hindu voters in the Tamil Nadu ahead of the assembly elections next year. The Yatra will cover all Murugan temples across the state for the same. However, the government had rejected the BJP’s application for permission to conduct the Vel Yatra citing the COVID-19 pandemic protocols and also communal unrest.

The BJP challenging the denial of permission in the Madras High Court, but the court has also asked how the Yatra has been allowed to proceed without permission.
