A massive fire broke out at Oil and Natural Gas Corporation’s Hazira plant in Gujarat around 3am on Thursday. The fire is now under control and so far there are no reports of casualties.
ONGC took to Twitter on its official handle around 9.50am to say, “Fire at Hazira Plant has been completely extinguished. Efforts are being made to resume normal operations at the earliest”.
Earlier, it had tweeted that, “A fire was observed in the Hazira gas processing plant in the morning today. Fire has been brought under control. There is no casualty or injury to any person.”
Fire tenders from Hazira and nearby Surat had reached the site to douse the fire and initiate cooling operations.
There are unconfirmed reports that windowpanes of several homes in Surat, which is less than 25 kilometres from Hazira, were broken by the impact of the accident.
Surat District Collector Dhaval Patel stated that there were three consecutive blasts.
It is believed that the fire resulted due to a rupture in a gas pipeline between Hazira and Mumbai.
For the time being, terminals have been shut as a precautionary measure.
