COVID-19: Basavaraj Bommai becomes latest Karnataka minister to test positive

Bommai stated he had no symptoms and was healthy and was in home quarantine.

Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai announced on Wednesday that he had tested positive for COVID-19.

Taking to Twitter, Bommai announced he got tested for COVID-19 after an aide had tested positive on Tuesday. Bommai stated he had no symptoms and was healthy and was in home quarantine.

Bommai urged those who had come into direct contact with him to get tested immediately and take appropriate precautions.

Bommai is the latest minister in the B.S. Yediyurappa government to get infected with COVID-19.

On Monday, Urban Development Minister Byrati Basavaraj announced he had tested positive. Basavaraj said he had no health issues and got admitted to hospital.

Recently, Animal Husbandry Minister Prabhu Chavan, Labour Minister A. Shivaram Hebbar, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister K.S. Eshwarappa and Women and Child Development Minister Shashikala Jolle had tested positive for COVID-19. Last month, Yediyurappa, Health Minister B. Sriramulu, Tourism Minister C.T. Ravi, Agriculture Minister B.C. Patil and Forest Minister Anand Singh had tested positive and have now recovered.

Opposition leaders have also been infected, including former chief minister Siddaramaiah and current Karnataka Congress chief D.K. Shivakumar.

Karnataka is the state with the fourth-highest number of COVID-19 cases. As of Tuesday, Karnataka had reported 4,75,265 COVID-19 cases and 7,481 fatalities.
