Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who was undergoing treatment at a Gurugram hospital after contracting coronavirus, said on Friday that his result has turned negative. Shah, however, added that he will be in home isolation for the next few days.

"Today my coronavirus test report has come negative. I thank God and I express my heartfelt gratitude to all those who have blessed me and my family by wishing me well. Will stay in home isolation for a few more days on the advice of doctors," the 55-year-old leader tweeted.

He also thanked doctors and paramedical staff of Medanta hospital “who have helped me in fighting corona infection”.

The former BJP chief was hospitalised on August 2 after he tested positive for COVID-19. He was the first Indian cabinet minister to fall victim to the pandemic.

A day after Shah tested positive, Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad also went into home quarantine as he had met Shah.

On August 9, BJP leader Manish Tiwari shared a tweet claiming Shah had tested negative for the virus. However, hours after his tweet, the home ministry clarified that no test was conducted on him.

Earlier, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor had questioned why Shah didn’t choose Delhi’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for treatment and instead went to a private hospital.

"Public institutions need the patronage of the powerful if they are to inspire public confidence," Tharoor had tweeted.
