Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), on Thursday, warned that while the number of COVID-19 positive cases in the city may be on the decline when compared to Surat, this is no time to go back on caution as it would result in serious troubles.

Dr. Bhavin Solanki, in-charge medical officer of health, AMC, said it is advisable to take precautionary measures till the time a vaccine is available.

He said a study was undertaken in seven zones of Ahmedabad between June 16 and July 11, for antibodies and the positivity rate was found to be only 17.5 per cent. Dr. Solanki claimed that this was the biggest study undertaken in the world to detect herd immunity. As many as 30,000 persons were tested for antigen.

He pointed out that in order to claim that there is herd immunity, there needs to be 70 to 80 per cent positivity. According to him, no country in the world has developed herd immunity. He urged people suffering from cough, cold or fever to get tested instead of taking the symptoms lightly and going to work places.

The AMC has, meanwhile, recommended proper ventilation in homes and offices.

Ahmedabad has so far recorded 24,963 COVID-19 positive cases out of the 51,485 cases in the state. It also accounts for 1,561 deaths out of the 2,229 recorded in the state so far.
