A sub-inspector of police was arrested by the CB-CID on Wednesday in connection with the death of a father-son duo who were allegedly thrashed at a police station in Tuticorin district of Tamil Nadu. The probe agency has also booked six people on murder charges.

The CB-CID, which took over the sensational case on Wednesday, has altered the previous FIRs  and included murder charges against two SIs— Raghu Ganesh and Balakrishnan—and constables and members of the 'Friends of Police'. Raghu was later arrested.

P. Jayaraj and his son Bennicks, who were arrested for violating lockdown norms, died in a hospital on June 23 after being allegedly beaten up by police personnel at the Sathankulam police station.

The incident had triggered a nation-wide outrage, leading to the suspension of five policemen, including an inspector and two sub inspectors.

The state government had proposed a CBI probe into the incident, but the Madras High Court  directed a CB-CID investigation. The court directed the investigating agency's Tirunelveli DSP Anil Kumar to probe the case.

On Wednesday, Kumar and his team visited the family members of the deceased and the locality where the duo ran their cellphone shop. The team also visited the Sathankulam police station.
