Senior NCP leader and Maharashtra minister for housing development, Jitendra Awhad, has urged Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to consider imposing curfew in affected regions in order to combat the rising coronavirus infections in the state.

Three persons have died in Maharashtra due to coronavirus so far, while 89 others are undergoing treatment at various government hospitals in the state.

Awhad took to Twitter on Monday to demand the imposition of curfew in coronavirus affected areas in Maharashtra. Posting pictures of vehicles out on the street, Awhad wrote that measures like lockdown were not sufficient. "Sancharbadi lagu kara (impose curfew),” he tweeted, adding people were not taking the virus seriously. “I have experienced it personally after visiting a few places.”

Awhad told THE WEEK that the media should make people aware of the dangers of coronavirus infections. "Curfew will have to be imposed. People could be granted relaxation of four hours every day, two in the morning and two in the evening, to do their necessary daily purchases and shopping,” he said.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope has urged people to come forward for blood donation as blood banks in the state have volumes that will last for just about two weeks. Tope has also warned that the government will be forced to take serious action if people violate restrictions in force under Section 144, which prohibits assembly of more than five persons.

NCP president Sharad Pawar, too, has urged people to understand the gravity of the situation and not gather on streets or roads. He has also told people not to venture out in vehicles unless there is an emergency.
