Students of the English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Hyderabad, were left fuming after the university decided to shut their hostels "for renovation". Speaking to The NewsMinute, students alleged it could be a move to curb anti-CAA protests. The university was closed for a month in the winter until January 1.

According to multiple reports, the university released a notification on December 30, stating that, instead of opening on January 1, the hostel will open on January 18 and classes will commence from January 20. The New Indian Express reported that most students had booked their tickets to the college, while some others have already reached the campus. “Some of the students even hail from northeastern parts and other corners of India,” a member of the student union told the publication.

Speaking to The NewsMinute, a student asked, “First of all, there was one whole month when there were very few students on campus and that was the ideal time for re-construction. Then why did they send a circular out of the blue when the vacation was just about to end? And why should the entire campus vacate at once? They are allowing foreign students to stay. Why are only the others made to go home?”

In the aftermath of the CAA protests, campus attendance everywhere had suffered. In Jamia, scores of hostel students leaving for home. Several students of Delhi University boycotted exams and held protests. The AMU has been shut down till January 5, 2020, in the wake of anti-CAA protests and the hostels have been vacated.
