Ekta and Ravi Shekhar, a UP couple were arrested by the state police on December 19 while they partook in an anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) organised by Left groups in Varanasi.
It has been a week since the arrest and their 14-month-old baby has been in the care of the couple's relatives. Ayra, her grandparents say, has not eaten much in the absence of her parents.
“My son has not committed a crime. Why have the police arrested him? He was protesting peacefully. Can you imagine how their child is living without her mother? Is this the way to control crime?” asked Ravi Shekhar's mother Sheila Tiwari.
The grandparents of the child say that they somehow manage to feed her a few spoonfuls of food, but she keeps asking for her parents.
The state of UP, under Yogi Adityanath's government, has faced much violence in the last few days. The CM has said that he will take 'revenge' against protesters. Administration of Rampur district has sent a legal notice to 28 people for the recovery of damage to public property.
