Christmas season is here, and it is that time of the year when a lot of people get down to making wines at home. However, it looks like Keralites will have to think twice before engaging in this Christmas tradition from now on. Kerala's Excise Department has declared making wines at home a non-bailable offence.

In its notice ahead of the festive season, the department said it will keep a close watch on people marketing homemade wines through social media. The department will also keep an eye on wine-making videos that are shared through social media. A day after the circular was issued, a youth was booked for storing 40 litres of unprocessed wine at Veli in Thiruvananthapuram.

The department has also formed special squads to monitor brewing and sale of alcohol during the festive season in the state. The squads will also keep vigil on state borders to check the flow of spirit to prepare Indian made foreign liquor. The department has also warned people against selling alcohol-laced products in the name of Ayurvedic medicine.
