The Supreme Court on Thursday announced it did not want to continue proceedings against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in a contempt of court case filed by BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi.

Rahul had issued an apology soon after being summoned by the Supreme Court in the case. The Supreme Court accepted his apology.

The Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S.K. Kaul and K.M. Joseph, however, said Rahul should not have made political comments without reading its full order.

The bench said Rahul should have been far more careful and asked him to exercise more caution in the future.

Lekhi had filed the case against Rahul for allegedly attributing to the Supreme Court his slogan 'chowkidar chor hai', which he coined over the Rafale deal. Rahul had made the claim on April 10 after the Supreme Court dismissed the Narendra Modi government's preliminary objections over admissibility of certain documents for supporting the review petitions against its verdict in the Rafale case, announced in December last year.

Interestingly, before ruling on the contempt plea against Rahul, the Supreme Court bench had rejected review petitions against its December verdict on the Rafale deal, seeking a CBI probe into the purchase of the French fighter aircraft.
