Taking potshots at the detractors of the Union government's programme to vaccinate 50 crore livestock, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said "cattle don't vote." He was speaking after launching the BJP's poll campaign for the next month's Maharashtra assembly elections on Thursday.
The national animal disease control programme (NADCP) is aimed at eradicating foot and mouth disease and brucellosis in livestock and vaccinating over 50 crore livestock, including cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats and pigs against foot and mouth disease.

The prime minister was reacting to the allegation that the launch of NADCP was a political move.
In 2017 too the prime minister had made a similar remark. While speaking about promoting cow protection, Modi had said in Varanasi that cow protection is not vote-bank politics as animals don't vote, according to Telegraph. “We don't fix our priorities according to votes,” he was quoted as saying.
