CBI issued a fresh summons to Kumar asking him to appear before it on Saturday

Former Kolkata Police commissioner Rajeev Kumar was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday in connection with the Saradha chit fund scam. The arrest came soon after the Calcutta High Court vacated its order granting protection from arrest to Kumar and rejected his prayer quashing of a CBI notice that sought his appearance for questioning in the case.

Kumar is currently the West Bengal CID Additional Director General. Kumar was the commissioner of Bidhannagar Police in 2013 when the scam was unearthed. He was also a part of the Special Investigation Team formed by the state government to probe into the allegations against the Saradha Group.

The Supreme Court had in May 2014 handed over to CBI the probe into several chitfund scams, including the one by the Sudipta Sen-led Saradha Group, which has duped unsuspecting investors to the tune of Rs 2,500 crore.

The Saradha group of companies has allegedly duped lakhs of people to the tune of Rs 2500 crore, promising higher rates of returns on their investments.
