Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Principal Secretary, Nripendra Misra, has expressed his intention to be relieved of his duties, the government said on Friday. Speculations are rife that Misra would be appointed as the lieutenant governor of Delhi.

Principal government spokesperson Sitanshu Kar said Modi has asked him to continue for two weeks.

Former cabinet secretary Pradeep Kumar Sinha, a 1977 batch Uttar Pradesh-cadre IAS officer, who superannuated on Friday, has been appointed the officer on special duty (OSD) in the Prime Minister’s Office.

Misra, considered close to Modi, has held various key positions at the Centre and in the Gujarat government.

Misra was appointed the Principal Secretary to Modi on May 28, 2014. He is a 1967-batch retired IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre.

He has also served in various capacities in the government, retired as the chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in 2009.

Misra had served between 2001 and 2004 as the Principal Secretary to Modi when he was the Gujarat chief minister.
