In two separate tragedies, two women apparently committed suicide after killing their children in Sukma and Durg districts of Chhattisgarh in a span of 24 hours.

In Sukma, a woman and her six-month-old baby died in Palem village. In Durg, a woman allegedly killed both of her children before hanging herself in Jamul.

Durg police said that the apparent murders-cum-suicide came to light on Monday afternoon when the knocks of a milkman on the residence of Ranjit Kumar Singh in the Jamul locality did not elicit a response. Ranjit, a safety manager in ACC, was away at work.

Later, when the door was broken open, the bodies of Ranjit’s wife, Meera Singh (39), and son Pratyush (11) were found hanging at their home. The body of Meera’s daughter, Supriya (5), who had been strangulated, was found on the bed.

Police said no suicide note was found and family members and neighbours of the deceased were being questioned. Durg superintendent of police Prakhar Pandey told mediapersons, prima facie, it seemed Meera Singh committed suicide while the daughter was strangulated and the son had been hanged. However, further probe was on, he said.

Meanwhile, on Sunday evening, Dudha Hungi, a resident of Palem village in Kukanar area of Sukma, poisoned her two daughters and consumed poison to kill herself. Her six-month-old daughter, Mamita, also succumbed, while Sanjana (3 years old) is undergoing treatment. Dudha also allegedly tried to poison her eldest daughter, Sarita, but she managed to escape and alert relatives.

Police said Dudha was reported to be mentally unstable. However, the matter was being probed.
