“In case the missing person is in Pakistan, the state government will make all possible efforts to bring him back to India, by getting in touch with the ministry of external affairs,” Kamal Nath tweeted in Hindi.
Khandwa district collector Tanvi Saundriyal told THE WEEK that she has already met the family on Tuesday at their village as part of aapki sarkar aapke dwar (your government at your doorstep) campaign of state government.
The collector said that the immediate need of the family seems to be medical attention to mother of the missing man. “She is not well. Though she is stable, she needs some diagnostics for which we will make arrangements at Khandwa district hospital. We will also review the need of financial assistance for the family,” Saundriyal said. She added that efforts to trace or bring back Raju would be made only by higher authorities.
According to reports, Raju Laxman, 24, a resident of Indhawadi village near Punasa in Khandwa district, was arrested from Dera Gazi Khan area of Pakistan by the Pakistan Border Military Police on July 29. He was arrested on suspicion of spying on a nuclear enhancement establishment in the eastern Pakistan province.
The Pakistan authorities circulated a message about a Raju Laxman alias Rajo as a resident of ‘Nimarkhedi in Idor city’ as being arrested for suspected spying. They also circulated a made in India tag on underwear of the arrested man. Although the geographical details mismatched as there is no Nimarkhedi in Indore (the closest sounding to the named city), MP Police managed to trace down the missing person to Indhawadi village.
The family that survives on marginal farming has since claimed that Raju, a school dropout, was ‘possessed by evil spirits’ indicating that he was mentally unstable. The family has also claimed that Raju would often leave home for a fortnight or more and so they did not lodge a missing complaint.
Speaking to section of media, they said they were totally ignorant as to how Raju might have landed in Pakistan. They later approached the district authorities for help in bringing back Raju.
