BSP chief Mayawati on Tuesday attacked the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh for not granting parole to the uncle of the Unnao rape survivor, whose car met with a fatal accident on Sunday.

The car in which the Unnao survivor was travelling in to Rae Bareli was hit by a truck. Two of the survivor's aunts died of injuries from the accident, while the survivor and her lawyer are in a critical state at a hospital in Lucknow. They had gone to Rae Bareli to meet the rape survivor's uncle, Mahesh Singh, who had been convicted for assaulting the brother of BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar. The survivor had accused Sengar of raping her and he had been arrested in April 2018.

Taking to Twitter on Tuesday, Mayawati declared Mahesh Singh not being granted parole to attend the last rites of his relatives was “inhumane”. Mayawati also termed the road accident as a “murder”. Mayawati argued the denial of parole was evidence of the “complicity” of the Uttar Pradesh government in the “crime”. Mayawati also demanded that the state government reach out to the relatives of the Unnao survivor who launched a protest outside the King George Medical University in Lucknow.

Mayawati also referred to Unnao MP Sakshi Maharaj meeting Sengar in jail and called it evidence of the BJP's collusion with a gang-rape accused. She also urged the Supreme Court to take cognisance of the developments in the Unnao case. Maharaj had met Sengar in early June, after his victory in the Lok Sabha polls.

Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Tuesday meet the relatives of the Unnao survivor in Lucknow. Speaking to mediapersons, Yadav declared, “The survivor is not getting justice. This is when the president of India, prime minister are from Uttar Pradesh. If not now, when will she get justice?” On Monday, Akhilesh sought a CBI probe into the accident, alleging there was a conspiracy involved.
