A retired officer of the Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited will submit an inquiry report on the alleged fertiliser scam in a week's time.

GSFC's managing director Sujit Gulati said in Gandhinagar on Monday that less weight in the bags full of fertilisers could be a result of human or technical error. If a human error is found then action would be taken against the guilty.

A few days ago opposition Congress and farmers of the state had cried foul and alleged that there seemed to be a scam in fertiliser sold by GSFC, which is a state-government undertaking and a listed company.

Gulati emphasised that it is not a scam.

The alleged irregularities had come to light after a few farmers, suspecting less weight, weighed the 50 kg bags full of fertiliser. Less weight was found in bags in Saurashtra, south Gujarat and north Gujarat.

Farmers had said that in the bags they have found that the weight was less and the range was anywhere between 100gm to 1kg.

Gulati said that less weight up to about 150gm could be a result of reduction in the moisture during transportation.

The bags weigh 50kg and the cost of fetilizer sold by GSFC is Rs 28 per kilogram.

He said that till now the weights of the bags were checked randomly. However, now this would be checked with “motion technology”. This would mean that all the bags would be checked.

He said that weighing scales have been installed at the depots of the company in various parts of the state.

The MD said that between January and March, this year, only 8000 metric tonnes of fertiliser would have reached the farmers and if one takes into account a loss of 300gm for one bag then the total loss comes to Rs 16 lakh.

GSFC sells SARDAR brand fertiliser and the company is headquartered in Vadodara.

The sale of fertiliser has currently been stopped at several depots across the state.
