Spurned lover sets girl on fire in middle of road in Kerala

A college student was set on fire in the middle of the road in Thiruvalla town by a youth on Tuesday. The girl sustained 85 per cent burns to her body and is fighting for her life at a local hospital.

The youth, who set her on fire, was identified as Ajin Reji from Kumbanad. He was caught by the locals and handed over to the police. He was apparently carrying two bottles of petrol and had poured one of it on the girl.

The girl is said to be from Ayiroor and was heading for her classes in the morning when the attack took place. She is a student of Radiology in a private institute. The incident happened at 9.15 in the morning in the middle of the road. He poured the petrol on her and immediately set her on fire. It is understood that there was no time for anyone to interfere and try to save the girl.

According to the police, Ajin said that the two were in a relationship for the last two years and the girl had rejected him recently. Police say that this was a pre-planned crime and that Ajin had come with the intention of hurting the girl. The two had studied together in school.
