A researcher was killed and three others were injured in an explosion in a laboratory at Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as 32-year-old K. Manoj, who died in a burst of shock wave caused by an explosion.

According to sources the explosion occurred at around 2:20pm at the research laboratory of Aerospace Department’s Laboratory for Hypersonic and Shockwave.

Four people from the startup—Super-wave Technology Private Limited (SWTPL)—were at the laboratory at the time of incident. Three others—Atulya, Kartik and Naresh Kumar—were severely injured and are currently being treated at the M.S. Ramaiah Hospitals, where they are reported to be in a critical state.

The startup is promoted and managed by K.P.J. Reddy and G. Jagadeesh—both professors of the Department of Aerospace Engineering. They specialise in shock wave related technologies.

Authorities who inspected the spot said they were unsure about how the explosion took place. Sadashivanagar police are investigating the incident.
