An under-construction bridge collapsed in Kakdwip area of South 24 Parganas district on Monday, a senior official said.

There has been no report of any casualty, South 24 Parganas district magistrate Y. Ratnakara Rao said.

"The incident happened on Monday morning. We are waiting for further details," the district magistrate said.

A team has been rushed to the spot to look into the incident, he said.

This is the third incident of bridge collapse in the state in September.

Majerhat Bridge in south Kolkata had collapsed on September 4, killing three persons and injuring 24.

On September 7, an old bridge had collapsed near Siliguri in north Bengal leaving a truck driver injured.

In the wake of the Majerhat Bridge collapse in Kolkata on September 4, the West Bengal Public Works Department (PWD) has identified seven bridges in the city as being "most vulnerable" requiring urgent repairs, a senior official of the department said.

The seven are out of the 20 bridges in Kolkata that the PWD has classified as being "distressed" structures.

The seven bridges labelled as "most vulnerable" are Bijon Setu, Gouribari Aurobindo Setu, Belgachhia Bridge, Tollygunge Circular Road Bridge, Dhakuria Bridge, Tallah Bridge and Santragachhi Bridge, said the PWD official.

"Load-bearing capacities of these bridges were carried out and depending on that report, we have suggested to the police to impose restriction on goods-carrying vehicles to prevent further deterioration of the condition of the distressed structures," he had said.
