Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his silence in the gangrape of a 19-year-old board exam topper in Haryana.

The Congress chief took to Twitter to target the prime minister and said Modi's silence over the issue was "unacceptable", adding that it was shameful on the part of the government to leave the country's women unprotected and allow rapists to walk free.

"India hangs its head in shame as another one of its daughters is brutally gang raped. Prime Minister, your silence is unacceptable. Shame on a government that leaves India's women unprotected and afraid and allows rapists to walk free," he tweeted.

The tweet came even as the Haryana Police failed to nab the main accused even six days after the gangrape of the 19-year-old woman was reported. One of the accused in the case is an Army man.

The girl was on her way to a coaching centre when two young men, who came in a car, allegedly kidnapped her. "They took her to a nearby place, gave her a drink after which she couldn't regain her consciousness. When she got up, she saw there was one more boy," said A.S. Chawla, ADGP Operations, Haryana. The accused later left her near a bus stop in Kanina. "They dropped her back and called her parents to tell them about her location. Medical of the victim has been done," added Chawla.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had assured that the guilty would soon be brought under law. "Law will take its own course and whoever is found guilty will be punished," he said.

The opposition parties trained guns on the Manohar Lal Khattar government over the incident, claiming the law and order situation had deteriorated in Haryana.
