Former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Gurudas Kamat passed away in New Delhi on Wednesday. He was 63.

Kamat suffered a massive heart attack and was in the hospital at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife Maharookh and son Sunil.

A close friend of the family said that Kamat complained of severe chest pain in the morning. He was taken to the Primus Hospital in Chanakyapuri by his driver. He is said to have passed away within minutes.

Kamat was a five-time MP from Mumbai North-East Lok Sabha constituency. He had served as Union Minister of State for Home in 2009 and quit in 2011.

He was also a former president of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee. An advocate by profession, Kamat was a commerce graduate from the R A Podar College in Mumbai and also had a law degree from the Government Law College.

In a condolence message, Maharashtra Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant said "a very dynamic and renowned face of the Congress and a great leader Gurudas Kamat is no more".

Kamat had on Tuesday night tweeted his Bakri Eid greetings to all saying: "Eid Mubarak to all my friends celebrating Eid-Al-Adha. May all your prayers be accepted. May peace, joy and happiness never depart from your lives and homes."
