Bihar Social Welfare Minister Manju Verma, whose husband was allegedly in contact with the person who ran the Muzaffarpur shelter home where minor girls were raped, resigned on Wednesday.

The accused, Brajesh Thakur, had earlier denied having any close links with Manju Verma. The minister was in the eye of the storm ever since the name of her husband cropped up in the sex scandal case. Thakur was produced in a special POCSO court in Muzaffarpur, along with nine other accused arrested in the case.

Thakur had claimed that he was being made a "political scapegoat" as he was likely to get a ticket from the Congress in a forthcoming election.

Earlier, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had blamed "system flaw" for the case and rejected demands for sacking Manju Verma. He had said the minister can be asked "to go" only if she is found to have facilitated any wrongdoing and not because of "noises" being made.
