In yet another shocking case, a mentally unstable man was lynched by a mob in a village of Dindori district in Madhya Pradesh. The district police of Madhya Pradesh has arrested 10 people and registered cases against many others in the case.

Mukesh Gond, 27, was lynched on suspicion of being a 'child lifter'. The man was killed in the village of Singhwara and thrown in to a well by a group of dozen men.

According to the Superintendent of Police Karthiyekan K. the police recovered the dead body on August 1 from a well near the village of Singhwara under the jurisdiction of Samnapaur police station. The hands and legs were tied so as to ensure drowning. There were marks of brutal beatings on the body and the postmortem revealed that the man died because of the severe injuries received during the beating.

Though the police questioned the locals about the body, the villagers kept silent. It was only after a detailed investigation that the story of the brutal beating came out. Four men from the village, who were inebriated, had accosted Mukesh when he was roaming in the outskirts of the village. Mukesh, son of Lalla Gond, was mentally unsound. He was a resident of the neighbouring Anuppur district and had strayed into the village after he left his home few days back.

The four men, Jagdish, Chetram, Sanjay and Gangaram, accused Mukesh of being a bacha-chor (child-lifter) after he ran away from them. As he was mentally unsound, Mukesh could not answer their questions. As Mukesh ran, the four men pounced on him and took him to the village where others joined in beating him.

The DSP said that Mukesh was attacked by many others including Ramprasd, Ramdin, Hirasingh, Ratan, Khemsingh and Naresh. Police has arrested all of them and registered case against several others who were involved in the beating.

Later, when the villagers realized that Mukesh had died due to their attack, they tied Mukesh with ropes and threw his body in a well. The police said the villagers hoped that nobody will find the body.

This is the second such case in last 10 days in state. Earlier, a mentally disturbed homeless 30-year-old woman was lynched by a mob in a Singrauli district village of Madhya Pradesh. The woman was killed after a fake WhatsApp message went viral in the region that a woman child-lifter was active in the village. Villagers of Badgad under Morba police station killed the woman after taking her on a procession and dumped her in a nearby nullah (rivulet).
