After the tumultuous few days of political drama in Karnataka, actor and politician Rajinikanth said that what happened in the state was a win for democracy. "What happened in Karnataka yesterday was a win for democracy. BJP asking for some more time and governor giving 15 days time was a mockery of democracy. I would like to thank Supreme Court for its order, which upheld the democracy," Rajinikanth said in Chennai, reported ANI.

"The decision for contesting elections in 2019 will be taken at the time when the elections are announced, The party is not yet launched, but we are ready for anything. Also, it is too early to talk about any kind of alliance," he said.

After the Karnataka assembly elections threw up a fractured verdict, there was no clarity about who would form the next government. With 104 seats, the BJP emerged as the single largest party. But, the Congress extended “unconditional support” to arch rival Janata Dal (Secular), to stop the BJP. Together, they had the numbers. Yet, by around 9:30pm, the BJP confirmed that Governor Vajubhai Vala invited its legislative party leader B.S. Yeddyurappa to take oath as chief minister. The swearing in was fixed for 9am the next morning. The governor also gave him ample time—15 days—to prove his majority.

The governor's decision was struck down by the court, which asked them to prove majority in the house in one day. Hours before the floor test, Yeddyurappa resigned.
