It is that time of the year again, when temperatures begin to drop and the air quality in various metropolitan cities deteriorates. Delhi has recorded its first 'poor' air quality day of the season, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) settling at 245, the highest in 100 days.

According to the forecast by the Air Quality Early Warning System, the AQI in Delhi is likely to remain in the 'poor' category for the next two days.  The outlook for the subsequent six days too is likely to remain poor.

Considering the gravity of the situation, the Commission for Air Quality Management imposed Stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across Delhi-NCR, which includes various measures to counter the situation.

Steps to take to protect yourself from air pollution:

Reduce outdoor exposure: It would be advisable to spend less time outdoors so that you do not expose yourself much to the harmful pollutants.

Using air purifiers: While you might reduce outdoor exposure by trying to stay indoors, it does not guarantee clean air. Fine particulate matter can enter through windows and other openings and pollute the air inside your rooms. You could consider using an air purifier and also ensure they are regularly cleaned to make sure the air indoors is clean. Additionally, using appropriate masks is also very important

Look out for warning signs: Air pollutants can irritate the eyes and respiratory tract of individuals, especially in people with low immunity and pre-existing health conditions. Hence, it is important to look out for such signs and take immediate action.

According to Max Healthcare, sme common symptoms to watch for include:

Eye Irritation: Burning, redness or watering of the eyes.

Throat Irritation: A scratchy throat, discomfort or persistent irritation.

Respiratory Symptoms: Coughing, wheezing, chest tightness or unusual breathlessness.

Worsening Conditions: More frequent asthma symptoms or a noticeable deterioration in an existing respiratory or cardiovascular condition.

Consult a medical expert if you feel like your health is taking a hit due to the air pollution.
