Selena Gomez has spoken publicly about how her past nicotine vaping habit affected her voice. In a video shared on Instagram, the singer acknowledged that frequent vaping had changed the sound of her voice and warned fans against taking up the habit.
“I vaped nicotine a lot,” Gomez said, explaining that quitting nicotine had been difficult. She urged people who vape, or are considering starting, to reconsider their choices, stressing that the habit was “just not worth it.” She also said she had stopped vaping and hoped to maintain her progress.
The revelation comes after fans had previously questioned changes in her voice. As per media reports, during an earlier Instagram Live session, Gomez mentioned experiencing occasional swelling in her throat.
What is vaping?
Vaping is when you breathe a mist into your lungs using a handheld device, like an e-cigarette or vape pen. The mist, many assume, is water vapor. It is an aerosol made from heating liquid that can contain nicotine, flavoring, propylene glycol and other additives.
As per Cleveland Clinic, vaping is similar to smoking a cigarette, but vaping heats tiny particles out of a liquid rather than burning tobacco. You breathe these particles into your mouth and nose. From there, they go into your throat and lungs. Both vaping and smoking are addictive and bring potentially dangerous chemicals into your body.
How can vaping affect your voice?
As per Colorado Voice Clinic, vape aerosol can affect the voice box, as the vocal folds are extremely delicate and even small changes in swelling or dryness can affect the sound of your voice.
During vaping, the inhaled substances hit the vocal folds and can dry out the surface, causing irritation and inflammation as well. Over time, this can lead to noticeable voice problems.
