Bollywood actress Nushrratt Bharuccha sustained a serious spinal injury in an accident while she was on a work-cum-holiday trip in Bali, Indonesia.

Reportedly, she has suffered a fracture in her spine, which would require surgery.

Following initial medical evaluation and observation in Bali, arrangements were made to transport her back to Mumbai via an air ambulance for specialised spine surgery and recovery.

Spine injuries can be critical and would require a proper professional evaluation. Its severity ranges from manageable hairline cracks to life-threatening trauma.

Why can spine fractures be serious?

Nerve damage: The spine protects your spinal cord. Broken bone fragments can press on nerves or the spinal cord, leading to numbness, weakness, or permanent paralysis.

Instability: Severe breaks can make the spinal column unstable, risking further damage with any movement.

Types and severity

According to Cleveland Clinic, a fracture in your spine is based on where it is in your back and how your vertebrae are broken.

Stable compression fractures: Often caused by osteoporosis or minor strain, where a  Often caused by osteoporosis or minor strain, where a vertebra squishes or cracks. These are common and usually heal with rest, bracing, and time, but still need medical management.

Unstable fractures: Usually caused by high-impact events like car crashes or major falls. Bone pieces scatter or the spine loses alignment, requiring emergency surgery.

Distraction fractures: These happen when your vertebrae are suddenly pulled away from each other.

Cervical spine fracture: Broken vertebrae in your neck

Thoracic spine fracture: Broken vertebrae in your upper back that run from the bottom of your neck to the bottom of your ribs.

Lumbar spine fracture: Broken vertebrae in your lower back.

How long will it take for a spine fracture to heal

The recovery period for a spine fracture varies significantly depending on the severity of the injury, whether surgery is required, and the patient's underlying bone health.

On average, most stable spinal fractures take 8 to 12 weeks (2 to 3 months) to achieve basic bone healing, while full functional recovery and strength rehabilitation often take 6 to 12 months.

In acute cases, it would take 1-2 weeks with immediate pain management, strict activity restriction, brace fitting or surgical intervention.

On the other hand, in the case of initial bone healing, it would take 6-8 weeks. Soft bone callus formation; pain significantly subsides; light mobility and supervised walking begin.

Functional recovery includes 3-6 months. In this time, the fracture solidifies, and physical therapy focuses on rebuilding core strength, posture, and flexibility.

Full recovery will take 6-12 months or more. This is the time of full bone fusion, return to higher-impact activities and routine daily demands.
