What happened to Kwena Maphaka?
The 20-year-old left-arm pacer sustained a right hamstring strain during a training session. His withdrawal adds to an already growing injury crisis within the team's fast-bowling department. Maphaka joins Lungi Ngidi, who is also unavailable because of a hamstring-related injury.
To replace Maphaka, South Africa have called up Lizaad Williams to the squad.
For Maphaka, attention will now turn to his medical assessment and rehabilitation. South Africa have not yet provided details on how long the cricketer is expected to rest.
What is a hamstring strain?
Hamstring muscles are positioned at the back of the thigh, and a strain in these muscles is common in sports.
Hamstrings are used for most of the actions that involve movement of the leg. There are three grades of hamstring injuries, as per the Cleveland Clinic.
Grade 1. A mild strain with very little torn muscle
Grade 2. A moderate strain with some muscle tearing (a partial tear)
Grade 3. A severe strain where your muscles are completely torn
How long does it take for a hamstring injury to heal?
The healing process depends on the severity of the injury. According to experts, lower-grade hamstring tears tend to heal faster than more severe injuries. A grade 1 injury might need less than a week to heal. Grade 2 and grade 3 injuries can take up to several months to feel better. If surgery is required, then the recovery time period will extend.
