False. While raisins contain dietary fibre and sorbitol that may support bowel function, current evidence does not show that eating 5–6 raisins daily can relieve constipation, significantly improve gut health, reduce acidity, or prevent fissures and piles. Experts say raisins can be part of a healthy, fibre-rich diet, but they should not be considered a standalone treatment or a clinically proven "gut-healing" food.
In a viral Instagram reel posted by Dr Shubham Vatsya, Director and Head of the Institute of Gastroenterology & Hepatobiliary Sciences at ISIC Multispeciality Hospital, Delhi, who has over 5.28 lakh followers on Instagram, he claims that eating raisins daily can significantly improve gut health and help relieve constipation.
In the reel, Dr Vatsya says, "If Indians start consuming raisins regularly, then half of the people's constipation problem will be solved." He explains that raisins contain sorbitol, which helps retain moisture in the stool and improves the water balance in the gut. According to him, the dietary fibre in raisins also softens the stool, making bowel movements easier and more comfortable.
He further claims that regular consumption of raisins nourishes beneficial gut bacteria, reduces acidity and heaviness, and lowers the risk of anal fissures and piles by reducing straining during bowel movements. He also says that the potassium and antioxidants present in raisins support heart health and overall digestion, recommending that people consume "5–6 raisins every day at any time."
The reel has gained traction with more than 3.15 lakh views and 11,400 likes.
What research says?
Research suggests that raisins contain dietary fibre, sorbitol and other compounds that may support bowel function. However, current evidence does not show that eating a few raisins daily can "solve" constipation for most people or definitively improve gut health. While some studies have reported beneficial changes in bowel function and certain gut bacteria, researchers consistently note that the evidence remains limited and larger human studies are needed.
A 2011 review published in the Journal of Medicinal Food highlighted that raisins contain both soluble and insoluble fibre, each of which plays a different role in digestive health. The authors noted that while soluble fibre may slow gastric emptying and improve blood cholesterol and glucose control, "insoluble fibres are poorly absorbed and are known to improve faecal bulk and laxation and ameliorate constipation." They concluded that raisins may help people increase their overall dietary fibre intake, stating that the review "suggests a role for raisins to help increase total dietary fibre."
Researchers have also investigated whether raisins influence the gut microbiome. A 2016 laboratory study, which simulated the human gastrointestinal tract rather than studying people directly, found that sun-dried raisins promoted the growth of certain beneficial bacteria, including bifidobacteria, and increased the production of short-chain fatty acids. The authors concluded that sun-dried raisins "demonstrated considerable potential to promote the colonisation and proliferation of beneficial bacteria in the human large intestine" and "could exert a beneficial, prebiotic effect on the human gut via modulation of its microbiota." However, they cautioned that "more in-depth studies on the digestibility of raisins and the long-term effects associated with raisins’ supplementation need to be performed in vivo with human test subjects,” meaning the findings cannot be directly applied to people.
Evidence from human studies has been more modest. A 2018 exploratory feeding study involving 13 healthy adults examined the effects of consuming three ounces (about 85 g) of raisins daily for two weeks. The researchers found that raisin consumption did not significantly alter overall gut microbiota diversity, although the abundance of some bacterial groups changed. They also observed a reduction in bacteria closely related to Klebsiella species, which are potential intestinal pathogens. The authors concluded that while raisins "don't distort overall microbiota composition," they "may potentially be beneficial to the host," but stressed that any health benefits should be confirmed in future studies.
Another 2019 study similarly reported that adding raisins to the diet "did not significantly" affect overall microbiota diversity. Although the prevalence of specific bacterial taxa changed after raisin consumption, the researchers concluded only that "adding raisins to the diet can affect the prevalence of specific bacterial taxa," and noted that the potential health benefits "should be determined in future studies."
A 2020 review summarising the available evidence reported that earlier human intervention studies found higher raisin intake increased faecal weight, shortened intestinal transit time and increased the excretion of short-chain fatty acids - changes generally considered beneficial for colon function. The review also noted that in vitro and small human studies suggest raisins may influence the gut microbiota through their fibre, tartaric acid and polyphenol content. However, the authors concluded that "no firm conclusions can be drawn concerning raisins and microbiota, since there is a lack of scientific evidence," and emphasised that more well-designed human studies are needed before definitive health claims can be made.
Expert insights
Dr Anupama N. K., Senior Consultant – Medical Gastroenterology, Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru, said the viral reel overstates the benefits of eating a few raisins daily for constipation and gut health.
She explained that while raisins contain dietary fibre and small amounts of sorbitol, 5–6 raisins are unlikely to provide enough of these components to relieve constipation in most people. "Chronic constipation is influenced by multiple factors, including inadequate fibre intake, poor hydration, medications, lifestyle and underlying bowel disorders," she said, adding that raisins can be part of a fibre-rich diet but should not be considered a standalone treatment.
Addressing the claim that raisins improve gut health, Dr Anupama said some small studies have reported modest changes in the gut microbiome after raisin consumption, but "the evidence remains preliminary and inconsistent." She added that there is no strong clinical evidence that eating a few raisins daily significantly improves gut health or treats gastrointestinal disorders. "A healthy gut microbiome depends on an overall diverse, fibre-rich diet rather than any single food," she said.
Dr Anupama also said there is no strong scientific evidence that raisins directly reduce acidity, indigestion or heaviness after meals. While they may indirectly help reduce straining by improving stool consistency, "this has not been specifically demonstrated in clinical trials" for preventing fissures or haemorrhoids.
On the claim that raisins support heart health and digestion, she said they provide fibre, potassium and antioxidants, but 5–6 raisins daily are unlikely to produce measurable clinical benefits on their own. “Digestive health is influenced by the total quality of the diet, including adequate fibre intake from a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes, along with proper hydration and physical activity. Raisins should be viewed as one component of a balanced diet rather than a therapeutic food,” she said.
