What happens during a chlorine gas leak?
Chlorine gas is a potent pulmonary irritant. When it comes into contact with moist tissues—such as eyes, throat, and lungs—it reacts with water to form hydrochloric and hypochlorous acids, causing acute inflammation and chemical burns.
The severity of health risks depends on concentration and exposure duration.
In the case of low exposure, burning sensation in the eyes, nose, and throat; coughing; watery eyes; and minor shortness of breath are the symptoms. In the case of moderate exposure, severe coughing, chest tightness, choking feeling, nausea, vomiting, and skin blistering/burns are the health impacts.
