OpenAI has introduced 'ChatGPT for Teens,' a version of its AI tailored for users under 18, incorporating robust safety features and parental controls to foster a secure and educational environment. This initiative addresses the growing reliance of young people on AI for information and support, particularly concerning mental health, by implementing age-appropriate safeguards. The new mode automatically activates for users identified as minors and limits conversations on sensitive topics like self-harm and violence, while also providing educational tools such as study modes, quizzes, and visualizations to promote learning.

In a move to address mental health issues among the younger generation, OpenAI announced the launch of a version of ChatGPT tailored for minors.

The new 'ChatGPT for Teens' mode comes with parental controls and enhanced security features in the latest update. "ChatGPT for Teens is the same capable ChatGPT, designed to help teens learn, work through problems, and explore new ideas. It includes age-appropriate protections, tools that support balanced use, and optional parental controls," mentioned the official website.

What are the updated features in 'ChatGPT for Teens'?

The new mode will limit conversations with teens when asked about high-risk topics such as self-harm, violence and eating disorders. Apart from this, it offers educational tools that help students learn instead of sharing the answer. The new mode has educational tools such as a study mode, homework reminders, quizzes and visualisations.

The tool will automatically engage when a user is estimated to be under 18, or self-identifies their age as between 13 and 17. Parents/guardians will be able to set 'quiet hours', manage certain settings and receive notifications when teens search such sensitive topics.

Apart from these, the new mode will also feature a reminder that may appear before some image uploads, encouraging teens to check for sensitive information before sharing. Built-in, age-appropriate safeguards are also present to help reduce exposure to sensitive or potentially harmful content.

A lot of people, especially teens, are relying on AI tools and social media for mental health advice, which can become very dangerous. This has prompted various governments to restrict social media access to teens to guard them from cyberbullying and protect their mental health.

"We believe AI should expand educational opportunity, which is why we designed ChatGPT for Teens to support moments outside the classroom when help is not always available," OpenAI said.
